Community Building Begins
with the Boy Scouts of America
|
September 14,1982, President Ronald Reagan, who was the Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America, telephoned a young man, Alexander Holsinger, to congratulate him on becoming the 1 millionth Eagle Scout. A small article about this event appeared in Time Magazine, which Billy read.
Inspired by Alex's accomplishment, BJ immediately called our local Boy Scout office, and made arrangements to meet a Council leader at Dunkin' Donuts (when the donuts were still made in-store). Later that evening, BJ arrived home as Scoutmaster of Troop 30, a defunct troop based out of Ridgeville United Church of Christ. He started the troop with 5 boys, and within 5 years he had 20 scouts? |
This event was the beginning of our COMMUNITY BUILDING, working within our new community to make it a better place to live for ALL. BJ spent eight years as Scoutmaster, and I served as his Assistant Scoutmaster, retiring in 1990.
CONCERNed for the Community
and MADD About It
and MADD About It
With a year of experience herding Boy Scouts, in 1983 we decided to become Foster Parents, to teenage boys, the hardest sector of foster children to place in a home (everyone wants the babies). One of our boys lived with us for 3 years, the length of our involvement with the agency (Concern), while the other boy, who was transitioning back to his home, would stay with us during the week, and with his parents and siblings during the weekend.
In 1984 I became involved with a group of local people who were concerned about the escalating vehicle deaths of young adults from drinking and driving. We formed a local chapter of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and began advocating for victims of D.U.I. Unfortunately, after a year I decided to leave the organization when MADD started backing "random check points," which I found to be a threat to our Constitutional Rights.
