Sebastian 'Bastian' Madöri (1545-1605) & Margreth Weibell (1545-1607)
12th GGParents

The ancestors of Charles Franklin Madara can be traced back to our 12th Great-Grand-Father, Sebastian Madöri, who was born c. 1545 in the Basel Canton, Switzerland. The family line has been authenticated back to the year 1565, with the recorded marriage of Sebastian 'Bastian' Madöri and Margreth Weibell, on 13 February, in Sissach, and is proven by the marriage, baptismal and death records in the church registers of Sissach, as well as from the section books of the Province of Liestal, Switzerland. Sebastian & Margreth had 7 children over the next 13 years, living in Sissach all their lives, and dying there in 1605 and 1607, respectively.

Madöri & Weibell Marriage - 1565
"Further back, in the middle of the 15th century before the Reformation, a Werli Madöri and twice a Clewe Madöri are mentioned in an old Almanac of Sissach, in which book the names, together with the sums, were registered, of those persons who gave donations to the Roman Catholic Church so that after the person's death, every year on the date of death, a Mass would be offered for the repose of that person's soul. Still a bit further back, on the 15th of September 1438, in the Register of the Province of Basel, a Hans Madöri is mentioned as a witness to a sale of property in Sissach."

Niclaus Matheri Madöri (1720-1782) & Maria Elizabeth Wannemacher (1739-1815)
6th GGParents
Niclaus Matheri Madöri, our immigrant ancestor, was born in January of 1720 in Zunzgen, Basel Canton, Switzerland to Martin Madöri (1688-1764) and Maria M Jauslin (1685-1752). He married Elizabeth Trimmler in 1743. Elizabeth was born in Brombach, Switzerland in 1726. They immigrated to Philadelphia, arriving on 28 Sep 1749, aboard the ship ANN, with Captain Spurrier commanding. Accompanying them were their children Simon (1744-1809), Anna Maria (1746-1783), and Elizabeth (1748-1783).

They stayed only briefly in Philadelphia before settling in Reading. They had one more child together, Jacob (1750-1800) before Elizabeth (assumedly) passed away. Niclaus later married Maria Elizabeth Wannemacher (1739-1815, 6th GGMother), and together they had Casper (1755-1832), Michael (1756-1833), Christian (1757-1822, 5th GGFather), Nicholas (1763-1857) and Frederick (1779-1802) who were all born in Reading, PA. Of Niclaus' seven sons, four of them, Simon, Michael, Nicholas & Christian, served during the Revolutionary War.

Niclaus and his family lived in Reading, in a house that he built on Duke Street, which is now called Seventh Street. The house sat on Lot 137, which is now the southeast corner of Seventh & Cherry Streets in Reading. Niclaus died on 15 Apr 1782 in Reading, PA and was buried in the Schwarzwald UCC Cemetery in Jacksonwald, Berks County, PA.
